Invisible and Unfruitful

July 12, 2008 / by maggiemae

Some nights I go to bed and think 'boy, it sure doesn't feel like I got anything done!'  Yesterday was one of those days...even though I did do SOMETHING.  But so much of what we do is either invisible or unfruitful.  When there are clean dishes in the cupboard and no dirty towels on the floor does anybody say "Wow!  You got a LOT DONE TODAY!"  Nope!

Well, yesterday I took out the garbage, watered the front and sides of the house, and dug weeds out of the sidewalk and pathways.  Invisible!  I signed up for new homeowner's insurance and contacted the roofer to put on our new roof.  Invisible!  I did some research on zoning and building requirements only to find that everything is 'sight specific' so you have to personally go to city hall anyway.  Unfruitful!  I made phone calls and visits to people who weren't home.  Totally invisible and unfruitful!  I talked to the people who's window my daughter broke but they don't have an estimate yet, so that wasn't very fruitful either...although they did seem to appreciate the contact.  In the end, there was precious little evidence of my labor for the day.

Meanwhile, the dishes have been piling up and something is starting to smell.  My hands are still sore from all the weeding I did this week, but I am nowhere close to being done!  The living room I cleaned on Thursday is starting to fill up with stuff and fluff.

Oh well.  The sun is now streaming through the windows, beckoning me to go at it again with renewed zeal!  Perhaps I will make a concerted effort to do something that actually SHOWS that I've done something!  I'm very visual, and need the satisfaction of seeing results from my efforts.  Just crossing things off a list doesn't do it for me.

By the way...my daughter called again.  I know where she is!  YAY!

Y'all have a great day!

I know what you mean. I just spent three hours cleaning at my fathers house. He does a really good job on his own, but I wanted to clean where he doesn't think of. I should do it weekly and keep on top of it. It would be much easier.

That's so sweet of you to do this for your father!  There are plenty of places to clean that I don't think of too...until company comes...and often, it's too late!

Glad you heard from your daughter ----- that's what really matters.  the rest is just details.

Yep!  But it does seem that life is made up of them.

I remember the days when my kids were young and I would just about kill myself doing yard work and plantings only to come in and see the house a wreck.... I got a lot done and so did they but their done was not helping things look good. Still they had fun and I would stay up late putting things back in order, thinking about it now, I kind of miss it but my guess is if I went back in time, I would not miss it at all.

I was like that too! Those were the days!  We had more energy, and our kids actually did what we told them to,  even if it didn't look much like it.

Yes it was fun but I have to admit, I do enjoy the freedom of having grown children. It was fun when they were young but I so very much love my freedom now. I am lucky to have the best of both worlds.

I call these kinds of tasks "deep cleaning".  It is like cleaning a light fixture or the baseboards.  Nobody but you ever knows it has been done.  Oh Well!  Such is the lot of a woman--to toil in obscurity forever!
