Sweet Sunday!

July 14, 2008 / by maggiemae

It was a BEAUTIFUL day!  I got up early, as usual, and prepared for the day, thinking I had an early morning meeting.  Well, I was mistaken!  So I had a bit of extra time to spend with my husband and youngest daughter before church, and before my husband had to go out on the road.

We all went berry picking in the yard, and 10yo and I sat on the trampoline to eat them.  It is becoming a favorite hang-out spot.  It's so comfortable to lay on!  Our house is oriented north, so it's often cold, even on warm days (which are few and far between here on the coast).  So being able to lie in the sun on a warm trampoline is proving to be a very nice treat for me!  I know...you're suposed to JUMP on trampolines, not lay on them!  The way we do it is 10yo jumps, and I bounce around.  It's FUN!  (I'm so lazy)

After church we made spaghetti and brought some over to the neighbor kid who's mom is out of town.  He was really happy to get it!  I feel bad that I haven't done that more this week, but we haven't really had much in the way of dinners.  I've got my picky girls with me, and they don't like most of what we fix.  But the neighbor boy...he appreciates EVERYTHING!  I love to cook for people like that!

While at church I ran into a guy who had come over to my house earlier that week saying that he'd heard that our church helps people in exchange for work.  I told him how it usually works.

Once a month we have what we call "fast Sunday".  We are asked to go without two meals that day, giving the money we would have spent on food to the church.  The money is then used to help people in need.  It's usually used for 'members' needs first, but if there is money left over, it may be used to help others in the community.  Whether you have to do work for it or not is entirely up to the bishop.  I arranged for him to meet with the bishop to discuss it.

Well, the bishop agreed to help, telling him to go and do 10 acts of service, writing them down on a list...more for his own benefit than for ours.  He seemed happy, and eager to let me know some of the things he was doing to help people.  I'm really glad it worked out...and especially happy to see this person taking joy in helping others!
